The Yoshida Fire Ceremony🔥

September 5, 2025

Hello, we are Toyoko Inn Bus!

It's still hot, how are you doing? I hope the cooler weather of autumn will come soon.😅

I went to the Yoshida Fire Ceremony and Susuki(Pampas grass) Festival , which is held every year on August 26th and 27th in Fujiyoshida City , Yamanashi Prefecture!

The Yoshida Fire Ceremony is one of Japan's three most unusual festivals, with a history of over 450 years. As the name "Fire Ceremony" suggests, many large torches are lit along the approximately 1km road from the Kanadorii (Shrine's gate) near Fujisan Station to the Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine 🔥

I headed to Fujiyoshida City with excitement, expecting to see a spectacular sight✨

The Yoshida Fire Ceremony began at 2:30 pm on the 26th at Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine

Participants visited the shrine, prayed, and performed a Shinto ritual to transfer the god to a portable shrine(called Mikoshi).

They wore matching uniforms according to their respective units, and the bells attached to their waists jingled with every step🔔

The children's Mikoshi set off first. Their energetic shouts echoed throughout the area😆

The children walked a considerable distance on the 26th and 27th, accepting offerings from worshippers along the way🏃‍♂️

Next, the participants who had finished the ritual emerged from the shrine grounds carrying the Mikoshi!

Brave and cool!!👍

There are two Mikoshi : the golden Myojin mikoshi and the red Oyama Mikoshi modeled after Mt. Fuji🗻 The Myojin Mikoshi always goes first, and it is a rule that the Oyama Mikoshi never overtakes the Myojin Mikoshi.

After parading around the town for a while, the two Mikoshi headed to their lodging(called Otabisho) for the day , located a short distance from the shrine.

When the Mikoshi arrived at the Otabisho, preparations began to light the large torches🔥

Large torches were set up one after another along the road from the Kanadorii gate in front of Fujisan Station to the Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine.

Starting with the torches in front of the Otabisho, the fire was lit in turn, and finally the large torch in front of the Kanadorii gate 🔥

Combined with the food stalls along the road, the ceremony reached its climax✨

Participants stood by the burning torches and took care of the fire.

The torches burned fiercely, but there has never been a fire during this ceremony before!
However, sparks are constantly falling, so be careful when walking near the torches😅

In the residential area, local people were lighting bonfires in front of their houses, which was also a very rustic and lovely scene🥰

The ceremony continued in full swing until around 10pm.

The next day, the Susuki Festival began in the afternoon at the Otabisho🌤

The two Mikoshi were lifted up again and paraded through the town.

The Mt. Fuji-shaped Oyama Mikoshi stopped at Fujisan Station and was lifted up and dropped three times. This is a Shinto ritual to pray for Mt. Fuji NOT to erupt🗻

The two Mikoshi then met in front of Station and toured places associated with the shrine.

As the Mikoshi passed through the nearby Sainenji Temple, the head priest recited sutras to see it off 🙏

The two Mikoshi has finally returned to the Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine

After returning to the shrine, the Mikoshi made seven laps around the square called "Takamagahara" within the shrine grounds.

Worshippers who had previously only watched the festival now carried offerings of pampas grass and circled the square seven times with the Mikoshi.

Afterwards, a Shinto ritual was held to return the god residing in the Mikoshi to the shrine.

The Mikoshi was then placed inside the shrine, and the festival came to an end.

During the Yoshida Fire Ceremony, local people, from children to adults, could be seen enthusiastically performing their assigned roles in the ceremony, and together with the impressive sight of the giant torches, they left an unforgettable impression✨

We have uploaded a reel video of the fire ceremony to the Toyoko Inn Bus Instagram account. Please take a look as it will give you a better feel for the ceremony atmosphere, including the intensity of the flames from the large torches and the sound of the bells🔥🔔
