Kawazu Cherry Blossom🌸The burning of Mt.Omuro🔥

Februry 20 , 2026

Hello, We are Toyoko Inn Bus🚌

The sunny days continue and I can't wait for spring to come 🌸

The other day, I went to the east coast of the Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka Prefecture ! Izu is full of attractions all year round, including hot springs♨, beautiful nature🏞️, zoos and botanical gardens🦩🌵, but now is the best time to visit, when the early-blooming Kawazu cherry blossoms begin to bloom🌸

This time, I visited Kawazu Town, where the Kawazu cherry blossoms are beautiful, Inatori in Higashiizu Town, which is known for its hanging Hinamatsuri dolls (Hinamatsuri : traditional Japanese girls' festival) and golden-eyed snapper, and Mt. Omuro in Ito City, where the mountain burning ceremony is held every February!

First, I went to Kawazu Town where the Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival was being held.

It's so beautiful 🌸 There are also spots along the Kawazu River where you can enjoy the combination of cherry blossoms and rape blossoms 😆

On the trees, Japanese white-eyes birds are pecking at the cherry blossoms and sucking nectar, creating a truly spring-like atmosphere ❤

This time, I went around 7:30 in the morning to avoid the crowds, but it seems that there are many shady or backlit areas along the Kawazu River in the early morning hours.

The sun gradually shines in from around 8am, making the cherry blossoms look beautiful ✨The closer it gets to lunchtime, the more crowded it becomes, so it's a good idea to decide when to visit based on the sunshine and crowds⏰

The 2026 Kawazu Cherry Blossom Festival will be held from February 7th to March 8th 🌸 The best time to see the cherry blossoms is mid to late February, so we recommend visiting early!

I stopped by the Izu Orange Center on the way from Kawazu to Inatori ! Their specialty is their "ultra fresh juice" made with home-grown mandarins grown in the Izu sun and honey 🍊

The refreshing tartness of the mandarin oranges and the sweetness of the honey are a perfect match 😆 You can really tell that they use whole mandarins in this flavor 🍊

Izu Orange Center also has a wide selection of souvenirs, so it's recommended as a rest spot during your trip👍

Next, I arrived at Inatori in Higashiizu Town🚢

At Inatori Fishing Port, a morning market is held every Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday morning, where you can enjoy fresh seafood. I was hungry, so I decided to try the morning market's specialty, "Kamameshi with Golden Eye Snapper (Fish-flavored rice)" 🙏

When I opened the lid, the delicious aroma of fish and rice wafted out😍 The rice at the bottom of the pot was slightly burnt and fragrant🍚 It takes a little time to cook after receiving the order, but it's well worth the wait😆

The horse mackerel being grilled nearby also looked delicious 😋 I'll definitely try it next time 🐟

Now that we've had our fill, we head off to see another Inatori specialty: the hanging doll decorations. Located about a 12-minute walk from the port, "The Inatori Cultural Park Hina Museum" exhibits hanging Hinamatsuri dolls that have been passed down since the Edo period 👧

Each doll is small and cute, but when they are all gathered together they make a spectacular sight !

Inatori's hanging dolls are displayed on Hinamatsuri (Girl's Festival) to pray for the health and growth of girls . There are various types of dolls, such as babies, rabbits, and peaches, and the shape changes depending on the prayer being made👶

I could feel the prayer that went into every stitch, and it warmed my heart 😊

The Inatori Cultural Park Hina Museum is open seasonally, so please check the opening days on their website before visiting.

During the Hinamatsuri period, Hina dolls are also displayed at Susanoo Shrine, located north of the port.

On the stairs behind the torii gate, there are gorgeous Hina dolls! These are also very beautiful🥰

Kawazu cherry blossoms are in bloom along the way to the shrine, making it a great place to enjoy a leisurely stroll🌸

The next day, as the sun rose, I headed to Mt. Omuro in Ito City.

Mt. Omuro is covered with grass, the material used to make thatched roofs, and has very few trees. In early summer, the mountain is covered with young leaves that resemble matcha pudding🍮 but in winter they turn the color of dead grass. Burning this dead grass encourages the growth of new shoots, protecting this unique vegetation.

The burning of the mountain is carried out in two stages. First, the crater part at the top of the mountain is burned, and once the fire is under control, the whole mountain is burned. This is to allow animals to escape to the top of the mountain when the whole mountain is burned🐭

When I arrived at the lift station at Mt. Omuro, there were already a lot of people lined up early in the morning!

The first 60 people will be able to purchase a torch and experience setting fire to the mountain 🔥 Additionally, the first 600 people will be able to take the lift to the top of the mountain and watch the staff set fire to the crater. There were already over 60 people lined up at 7am, but there was still room for the first 600 people ✨

When I reached the top of the mountain by lift, I was greeted with a stunning view of Sagami Bay and Mt. Fuji🗻

At the summit is Sengen Shrine, which enshrines Mt. Fuji ⛩

At 9:15 am, staff began burning the mountain at the crater🔥

At first, the fire seemed to spread slowly, but it gradually spread and became a spectacular sight‼️

The crater at the top of the mountain was completely burned ! Depending on the wind direction, you may be exposed to smoke, so you will need a mask or handkerchief to cover your mouth😷

After that, once the staff have confirmed that the fire is out, they will descend the mountain and begin preparations to burn the entire mountain. The lifts to descend the mountain can be very crowded, so I recommend wrapping up your visit to the crater early and heading down the mountain.

At noon, the mountain burning began! The 60 participants, who had purchased torches, followed the staff's instructions and lit the mountain on fire from the west side of the lift station.

At the same time, fires were also set in other areas , including around the lift🔥

In an instant, the entire mountain was engulfed in flames‼️ ️ Areas that should not burn, such as the lifts, had been cleared of grass in advance to prevent the fire from spreading.

The fire burned away the mountain in about 20 to 30 minutes, and a scorched Mt. Omuro emerged from the smoke😮It was a very emotional day to be able to witness this important annual event😍

The burnt, blackened Mt. Omuro will regain its former glory in early summer, covered in young leaves 🌱Please come and see Mt. Omuro, which resembles a matcha pudding🍮
