This time, I went to Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City from New Year's Eve 2025 to New Year's Day 2026.

Shimizu is a city that has flourished as a key hub of maritime traffic since ancient times, and has a magnificent port that is counted as one of Japan's three most beautiful portsThis is a recommended tourist spot where you can spend a whole day having fun, with plenty to see, including spectacular views of Mt. Fuji, including Miho no Matsubara, gourmet spots full of fresh seafood, shopping and amusement facilities, museums, and more!

First, I went to JR Shimizu Station on New Year's Eve

In front of the station is Toyoko Inn Shizuoka Shimizu Ekimae It's a little hard to see as it's hidden behind the building in front, but it's conveniently located just a short walk from the west exit of Shimizu Station! Please feel free to visit us when you come to Shimizu Ward, Shizuoka City

This time I headed to Shimizu Fish Market near the east exit

Shimizu Fish Market -Kashi no ichi- is located along Shimizu Port and sells fresh seafood, including those from Suruga BayThe facility was recently renovated in April 2025 and is very clean

It was just lunchtime, so I had a "Tuna Bowl" at the Fish Market Restaurant "Uoichiba shokudo"

This is a limited-quantity menu item at this restaurant, but if you don't say "stop!", the tuna will pile up like a mountain. It's a surprising amount

After filling up on delicious tuna, I took a walk around the area.

From Shimizu Port, you can take the Suruga Bay Ferry to Toi on the Izu Peninsula, or the water bus to Miho no Matsubara (not operating during the New Year holidays)

This port was designated an international trading port during the Meiji period and became even more active. Near the port is the Verkehr Museum, where you can learn about the port's history in an easy-to-understand way, so if you're visiting Shimizu, why not stop by?

I walked along the harbor and promenade and arrived at the complex, S-Pulse Dream Plaza.

The building and Ferris wheel are decorated with mascots from the J1 League soccer team, Shimizu S-Pulse, and there is a team merchandise shop inside the buildingThere are also other fun spots to enjoy, such as the amusement facility "Chibi Maruko-chan Land", restaurants, and souvenir shops

On this day, a New Year's Eve event was held at the seaside square, and the "Hagoromo Dance" (the dance of the heavenly maiden's shawl), a dance handed down at Miho Shrine in Miho no Matsubara, was dedicated

The current Hagoromo Dance was discontinued in 1940 and revived in 1980. I was captivated by the sight of the dancers gracefully dancing to gagaku (traditional Japanese music)😍

I witnessed a wonderful New Year's Eve event and welcomed in 2026 🎉And I headed to Sattatoge Pass to see the first sunrise of the year !

Sattatoge Pass is a famous spot depicted in the famous ukiyo-e print "Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido" and offers a spectacular view of Mount Fuji and Suruga Bay

Before the Meiji period, this area was famous as a difficult spot on the Tokaido road, and since there was no land along the coast, a road was built through the mountains .Today, the coastline, which was uplifted by an earthquake during the Edo period, is home to a unique landscape of expressways, national roads, and JR train tracks 🚃

I left JR Okitsu Station before dawn and walked along the hiking trail for about an hour to reach the observation deck. The slope was not very steep, so I was able to walk even in sneakers.

Sattatoge Pass is also a popular spot for viewing night views, and from the observation deck you can see the beautiful lights of cars driving on the road below

At about 7am the sun finally rose

As I looked north, impressed by the warmth of the sunlight, Mount Fuji was hidden by cloudsHowever, as I waited, the clouds cleared and Mount Fuji appeared

mandarin orange fields spread across the slopes of the passShizuoka Prefecture is famous not only for its tea but also for its mandarin oranges . There are unmanned mandarin orange stands along the hiking trail, so be sure to try some when you visit

I descended the pass and headed towards JR Yui Station . Yui's specialty is sakura shrimp, but the restaurant was closed due to the New Year I'd love to try that next time I come.

To conclude our trip, I went to visit Mishima Taisha Shrine in Mishima City

Mishima Taisha Shrine is known as the most sacred shrine in the Tokai region, and is a very popular place to visit for the first time in the New Year ! The grounds were packed with worshippers, but thanks to the skillful guidance of the staff, I was able to pray relatively smoothly .
