Spring has come🌸Cherry blossoms and the Shingen Festival in Kofu!

April 15, 2025

Hello, we are Toyoko Inn Bus.

It's a warm and comfortable season now! It's perfect for outings🥰

The other day, I went cherry blossom viewing in Yamanashi Prefecture🌸

Yamanashi Prefecture is surrounded by mountains such as Mt. Fuji , the Akaishi Mountains (Southern Alps), the Yatsugatake Mountains , and the Okuchichibu Mountains , and the cherry blossom season varies slightly depending on the altitude.

This time, I went to the Kofu Basin area, where many places are in full bloom in early April.

The first place I visited was Yatsushiro Furusato Park in Fuefuki City .

The park is located on a hill overlooking the Kofu Basin and offers an amazing view!

Fuefuki City is the number one producer of peaches in Japan.

So, the park was surrounded by peach fields, and I enjoyed both the cherry blossoms and the peach blossoms.

Both flowers are very beautiful😍

These flowers will bear fruit and turn into delicious peaches in early summer🍑

The peak season for peach picking is from late June to early August. I would love to visit Fuefuki again during that time😋

My next destination was Katsunuma-budokyo Station (Koshu City) on the JR Chuo Line.

My recommendation is the combination of the cherry blossoms in the square in front of the station and the old train cars!

It's very tasteful and nice.🌸

If you time it right, you can even see the train running through the cherry blossoms in full bloom.

There was a small souvenir shop at the station selling wine and sweets.

I was hungry, so I decided to have some " Budo Kobai " from Honobe Shokai Co., Ltd. as a snack.

The flat dough , which is somewhere between bread and a cookie , contains raisins🍇

The lightly sprinkled sugar coating has a crunchy texture and just the right amount of sweetness.

The rustic dough and raisins were delicious, and it was a dish that left me very satisfied😋

I took a short trip from the Kofu Basin to visit the Yamataka Jindai Sakura in Hokuto City.

Yamataka Jindai Sakura , famous as one of the three most famous cherry trees in Japan , is one of the oldest cherry trees in Japan, estimated to be over 2,000 years old.

Although the tree's vigor has been declining in recent years, the sheer size of this cherry tree, with a height of 10.3m and a trunk circumference of 11.8m, is overwhelming!

The Yamataka Jindai Sakura is located in the grounds of Jisso-ji Temple .

In addition to the Yamataka Jindai Sakura, there are many other things to see within the temple grounds, such as the descendants of Japan's three most famous cherry trees and daffodil fields, so I highly recommend you visit!

Finally, I headed to Kofu city.

The Shingen Festival was being held that day! And, the city was bustling with tourists enjoying the festival.

First, I went to Takeda Shrine .

The contrast between the pale pink cherry blossoms, yellow rape blossoms, and red bridges is beautiful.

The row of cherry trees in front of the shrine ( Takeda Street ) continues all the way to Kofu Station .

On your way back to the station from the shrine, it would be nice to take a leisurely walk while admiring the cherry blossoms.

Next, Maizuru Castle Park is located on the east side of Kofu Station , where cherry blossoms and Japanese quince flowers were in bloom.

And although it was quite a climb to the main castle ruins, the views were amazing.

A bronze statue of Lord Shingen welcomes me at the south exit of Kofu Station!

Participants in the Shingen Festival dressed up as Samurai and took photos with tourists.

Toyoko Inn Kofu-eki Minami-guchi No.2 is located along the main street just outside the south exit of Kofu Station.

This hotel has a gallery attached to it, where exhibitions, concerts, and other events are held from time to time.

Near Toyoko Inn, there were viewing stands for the main event of the Shingen Festival , the Samurai procession.

Mikoshi (portable shrines) and cavalry troops appeared one after another.

The Samurai procession has finally begun! Participants dressed in armor march briskly through the streets.

Lord Shingen (Takeda Shingen) was a warlord who ruled Kai (present-day Yamanashi Prefecture) during the Sengoku period.

The Takeda army was famous for their strength in battle, and their armor, which was all red, was called " Aka-Zonae" (red armor ) and they were feared by other Sengoku daimyo.

This year, the role of Lord Shingen was played by former Takarazuka Revue member Jun Shibuki!

She was gorgeously dressed, had a dignified presence and was very cool and beautiful😍

The cherry blossoms in the Kofu Basin are past their peak, but there are many other spots in Yamanashi Prefecture where the cherry blossoms will soon be in full bloom, such as Kawaguchiko, Oshino Hakkai, and Yamanakako🌸

We offer reservation-only day tours to visit Oshino Hakkai and Arakurayama Sengen Park!
