Tea picking season has come in Shizuoka!

May 20, 2025

Hello, we are Toyoko Inn Bus!

It's the beautiful season of fresh greenery 🍃I hope you all enjoy going out🥰

The other day, I went to Shizuoka Prefecture.

Shizuoka is famous for its tea production 🍵 Tea leaves start to be picked around 88 days after the beginning of spring (May 1st in 2025)🍃

So, every year from early May, tea picking experiences and tea events begin in various parts of Shizuoka Prefecture.

Before going to the tea fields, I first stopped off at Kakitagawa Park (Shimizu Town) .

The source of the Kakitagawa River is rainwater and melting snow from Mount Fuji seeping underground and springing up around Shimizu Town.

The amount of spring water is so abundant that it is said to be the largest in the Orient.

You can see the water gushing out from the park's second observation deck.

The clear blue water is very beautiful😍

From the first observation deck you can see the upstream of the Kakitagawa River .

There was a time when the Kakitagawa River was polluted by industrial wastewater, but thanks to conservation efforts it has regained its beauty and is now known as one of Japan's three cleanest rivers.✨

I want to protect this beautiful water forever!

My next destination was the Ohbuchi Sasaba tea fields in Fuji City, a popular spot for beautiful views of Mt. Fuji 🗻

The weather was lovely and the tea festival was being held on the day I visited !

There were lots of activities to enjoy tea, including an outdoor matcha experience, souvenir and food booths, and a photo session with people dressed in traditional tea-picking costumes🍃

I was very satisfied with the picturesque scenery🥰

Also, about a 20-minute drive from there is the
Mt.Fuji World Heritage Center of Shizuoka (Fujinomiya City)🗻

You can have fun learning about the history of Mt. Fuji, so why not visit both places!

The next place we visited was Nihon-daira in Shizuoka City .

As I drove along the mountain roads, I enjoyed the beautiful views of Mt. Fuji with Suruga Bay😍

When I arrived at the parking lot at the top of the mountain, the first place I headed to was the Nihon-daira Tea Hall.

Individual guests can only experience tea picking in early May🍵

The view from the tea fields behind the shop was amazing!

After picking the tea, head to Nihondaira Yume Terrace .

From this wooden deck, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the mountains including Mt. Fuji , the ocean side including Ohkuzure Coast , and the cityscape of Shizuoka City😆

In front of the Nihon-daira Hotel there is a bronze statue of the Japanese hero Yamato Takeru👍

The reason this place came to be called Nihon-daira lies in the ancient legend of Yamato Takeru.

While Yamato Takeru was on his way to pacify the eastern provinces, he was nearly burned down by his enemies here, but he overcame the difficulties and defeated the enemy, and then looked out in all directions from the top of this mountain.

From this legend, this place came to be called Yamato-daira, and it is said that the name later changed to Nihon-daira.

(In Japanese, Yamato and Nihon mean the same thing.)

By the way, you can take the ropeway at Nihon-daira to the neighboring mountain, Kunozan Toshogu Shrine , but it can get very crowded depending on the time of day😅

Please be careful if you visit Kunozan Toshogu Shrine and Nihon-daira.

Finally, I went to the Fujinokuni Tea Museum (Shimada City).

In addition to the tea picking experience, there were also exhibits on types of tea from around the world, processing methods, tea rooms, and more🍵

( Please check the Tea Museum website for the dates when the tea picking experience is held .)

Tea cultivation in Shizuoka is said to have begun during the Kamakura period when a monk named Ben-en planted tea trees in what is now Ashikubo, Shizuoka City.

Later, during the Meiji period, the samurai of Edo moved to Shizuoka, and with the advice of Katsu Kaishu(Minister of the Edo Shogunate), tea plantations began to be developed in Makinohara and around Fuji, and Shizuoka Prefecture became a tea producing region that Japan can be proud of.

It was very interesting to learn more about the tea that I drink every day🍵

Also, near the Tea Museum is the world's longest wooden pedestrian bridge, Horaibashi Bridge !

The bridge is 897.4 meters long.

In Japanese, the number 897.4 is read as "yaku-nashi (no disaster)" and the long wooden bridge is read as "nagaiki-no-hashi (bridge of longevity)," so it is considered to be auspicious✨

It may seem a little scary to cross because of the creaking sounds of the trees and the strong winds, but it is properly managed and safe, so please give it a try!

The souvenir this time is CRAFT BREW TEA 's first picked Shizuoka tea "New Tea" which I purchased at the Fujinokuni Tea Museum .

The concept of the  CRAFT BREW TEA series is "tea to enjoy in a wine glass."

The tea is brewed with water and an extraction method that is optimal for the tea leaves, and then bottled in a glass bottle.🍵

Taking a sip of the clear yellow-green tea, I found it to have a refreshing taste without any unnecessary astringency or bitterness.

The refreshing aroma of tea spreaded softly in my mouth, and the aftertaste was delicious🍃

It was a wonderful drink that I would enjoy relaxing in the shade on a sunny day😋
